If you are anything like me, you like the idea of going to the gym and getting in shape, but you don’t like the cost.

Gyms are generally really expensive and you have to pay every month.

So what if I have found a way for you to get in shape, but without hurting your wallet?

There are lots of places where you can exercise for free, so if you are into running, cycling, hiking or just getting out of the house, I’ve put together a list of 10 places where you can exercise for free.

Local Parks

A local park is a great place to exercise for free

If you have a local park nearby, they can be a fantastic place to go to exercise.

Nearly all parks feature paths that you can walk on, grass or fields where you can do some exercise like yoga and some parks have outdoor exercise equipment.

Another thing you could do is to see if the park has a playground and use the playground for exercise, whether it’s climbing or doing pull ups or press ups on benches.

Parks are a great place to exercise because you get the fresh air and you might meet someone new.

Trails and Nature Reserves

Trails and Nature Reserves are a good place to exercise for free.

If nature appeals to you, then local trails and nature reserves could be a good idea.

They usually have well maintained paths for walking or jogging which allows you to immerse yourself in beautiful scenery.

Some trails are harder than others so you can choose one to match your level of fitness, from an easy stroll to a harder hike.

If you’re an animal lover, many nature reserves have birds and wildlife so you really feel like you’re getting back to nature when you’re working out.

Community Centers

A community center is a great place to exercise for free,

Going to a community center can be a great way to exercise for free.

Many community centers have different types of sports you can play like basketball and volleyball.

In some centers, there is also an option to take part in free outdoor fitness classes.

This would mean you could potentially do something like yoga or Zumba, while perhaps meeting someone new from your neighborhood.

Most community centers have boards with information on about the local fitness events so you can stay in the loop.

School Tracks and Fields

A school track is a great place to run or jog for free.

This one may seem a bit peculiar so bear with me. School tracks and fields can be an excellent option for free exercise.

There are many schools that open their facilities to the public after school hours and on weekends.

This allows you to use their tracks for walking, jogging or running.

If you are after a quick workout then the flat even surface makes it ideal.

School fields generally are good for playing sports for free such as football or soccer.

Just remember to be respectful and you’ll have a great workout at no cost to yourself!

Beaches or Lakeshores

The beach is a great place to work out for free!

If you live near a beach or lake, you’ve got a fantastic free workout spot right on your doorstep!

Beaches and lakeshores offer a variety of exercise options, from swimming to jogging along the water’s edge.

Running on sand provides an excellent workout for your legs, while swimming is a full-body exercise that feels refreshing.

Who doesn’t want to recreate that iconic training montage from Rocky III while running on the beach?

Bringing along a frisbee or beach ball can add some fun with friends, and if you have a dog (and the beach is dog-friendly), you can take them for a walk along the shore.

I always feel calm and refreshed when I spend time by the water, and it really helps clear my mind.

Free Fitness Events

Yoga in the park is one way to get some free exercise

Free fitness events are a great way to get active and meet new people in your community!

Many towns and cities organize group activities like community runs, yoga sessions in the park, or boot camps that are open to everyone.

These events often cater to various fitness levels, so you can find something that suits you.

Plus, they’re a fun way to try out new classes without the commitment of a membership.

Check local community boards or social media groups to stay updated on upcoming events.

You might just discover a new favorite workout or make some great friends along the way!

Where to Find Free Fitness Events Description
Facebook Groups Many local community groups share information about upcoming fitness events, classes, and meetups.
Community Centers These often have bulletin boards with information about free fitness programs and events.
Local Parks and Recreation Departments Frequently organize events and may have a website or social media pages with schedules.
Noticeboards in Stores Grocery stores, coffee shops, and libraries often have community boards where local events are posted.
Meetup.com Helps people find and join local groups based on interests, including fitness.
Local Gyms and Studios Some gyms offer free trial classes or community events open to the public.
Social Media Following local fitness influencers or organizations can keep you updated on free events.
Event Websites Sites like Eventbrite often list free fitness events in your area.

Public Pools

Some public pools may let you swim for free during certain times.

If you are after a free swim, but you don’t fancy a nip in the sea then public pools can be an excellent choice.

There are many communities that offer access to their pools during designated hours, allowing you to have a leisurely swim or participate in water related exercise such as aqua aerobics.

Swimming is truly one of the best forms of workout that is easy on the joints which makes it suitable for all levels of fitness.

If you want to go with your children, then some public pools have designated times for families, just remember to check the pools schedule.

Bike Paths

Bike paths are great fun.

If you already own a bike or are able to borrow one then using a bike path (or a cycle path as they are known in some areas),  can be a fantastic way to get your exercise in.

Many communities have dedicated bike lanes or trails that are perfect for a leisurely ride or an intense workout.

These paths often wind through beautiful scenery, parks, or along waterfronts, making your ride even more enjoyable.

Riding a bike is great cardio and builds muscle strength, it’s also a low-impact exercise.

If you’re going out on your own or having a ride with friends or family, riding a bike along a bike path is a great way to get some free exercise.

Staircases

A staircase is a great way to exercise for free.

If you have access to a staircase, then you can do exercise for free.

Staircases are fantastic for getting your heart pumping!

They really work your leg muscles and best of all, they’re free to use!

I have lived in places where there is no hot water, so the shower is freezing cold.

I’ve also lived in places where the heating is broken so there’s only hot water which can be equally as uncomfortable.

I don’t like spending money if I don’t have to, but I do enjoy a good shower.

Not too cold and not too hot. Just right.

Another annoyance that I have sometimes, while I remember, is showers that have low water pressure and just drizzle.

They can be a pain too.

In this article, I am going to point out 10 places you can go to to take a shower for free.

Now I’m not going to include taking a “Spanish shower” which is just spraying a bit of antiperspirantt on, wiping yourself down with a baby wipe or jumping into a river or lake as although they may be good ideas, they’re not really showers.

Ready?

Let’s get into this!

Gyms

Shower at the gym to save money

Number 1 on the list is the gym.

It’s probably the most obvious choice.

A lot of gyms will give you a day pass for free so you can get that and use the shower.

Obviously if you are already a member of a gym you can use the showers as part of your membership.

Maybe look for budget gyms so the cost per day is less than, say an expensive health club.

Public Showers

Public showers are fantastic

You might not believe it, but there are actually public showers you can use for free up and down the USA.

The safety and cleanliness of them do vary so bear that in mind.

YMCA

It’s fun to stay at the YMCA

As the song from the Village People goes “You can get yourself clean” at the YMCA.

Not only is it a groovy disco tune from the 1970;’s it’s actually a charity that offers free showers for those in need.

Swimming Pools

Most swimming pools have showers

Another idea is swimming pools.

You may have to pay a small amount for entry to the pool.

You can then go for a swim and most pools have showers you can use at no additional cost.

Boat Marinas

Boat Marinas usually have showers for it’s residents

One place that not that many people think about is Boat Marinas. They usually have free showers the boat owners can use.  You obviously have to be respectful, but if you happen to buddy up with a boat owner or you go for a drink on someones boat, then you can use the shower for free.

Campgrounds

Campgrounds are another option for a free shower.

Campgrounds, for campers, obviously, normally have free showers the campers can use.

So this is another option!

Beaches

Another place that has free showers is the beach. If you live near the coast then you can just go to the beach and take a shower there! It’s a public place so just make sure you keep your bathing costume on!

Use Someone Else’s Shower

Why take a shower in your house, when you can do it in someone else’s?

I was undecided as to whether I should have this as 1 or 2 points, but you could ask your neighbor if you can use their shower or if you don’t get on with your neighbor you could ask a friend.

If they are a true friend they may let you use their shower once in a while.

Also if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Homeless Shelters

Homeless Shelters let homeless people use the shower for free.

Do you have to be homeless to use the showers in a homeless shelter?

Well I would imagine some shelters would let you use the showers and some wouldn’t.

You could maybe call them beforehand to ask.

Work

I have worked in at least 2 offices where there was a shower that I could have used, so why should I run up my heating bill when I can use the shower at work and let them pay for it instead?

So there were have it. There you go. 10 places or ways you can get a shower for free.  Hopefully, this article will have given you some new ideas that you may not have thought of before.

If you use some of the tips here it should save you some dollars on your heating bill!
